Ghent-based artist Sofie Steegen explores spatial color fields and physical surface incision in this standalone ceramic work. Formed from an arched terracotta slab, the composition features two prominent color blocks in deep forest green and rich violet, set against a warm ochre background and capped by a cobalt blue header.

Steegen contrasts dense glazes with gestural sgraffito—carving fine lines directly into the unfired pigments to expose the clay underneath. The interplay between color density, architectural framing, and spontaneous linework creates a quiet atmosphere that balances the weight of ceramic craft with the depth of abstract painting.

Artist

Sofie Steegen is a Belgian ceramic sculptor and painter based in Ghent. Her practice spans ceramic tile paintings, wall bas-reliefs, and hand-built vessels, where form and color emerge through an intuitive dialogue with clay. Drawing inspiration from historical artifacts, mythology, and expressive gesture, Steegen pairs raw, unrefined stoneware with vivid, layered glazes. Her work explores themes of texture, innocence, and material spontaneity, transforming heavy ceramic slabs into atmospheric pictorial surfaces.

Each work presented by Pièce de Résistance is individually hand-crafted or produced in limited studio editions using raw, natural, or hand-worked materials—including wood, metal, resin, and ceramic. Due to the artisanal methodology and organic nature of these materials, subtle variations in texture, grain, tone, patination, and minor dimensional nuances are inherent to the process. Imagery and gallery display pieces (including Artist Proofs) serve as accurate references, but final pieces may display unique, natural distinctions. These variations are essential to the artistic integrity of collectible design and do not constitute defects.

Limitation of Liability

Neither Pièce de Résistance nor its represented designers and artists shall be held liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages resulting from the handling, installation, use, or placement of any object. The gallery and its designers assume no liability for damage, wear, or alteration occurring after final delivery and client acceptance, including damage resulting from improper installation, environmental exposure, or normal wear and tear.
