Julien Michaud

PENGUIN

Julien Michaud’s expressive ceramic animalier figures bridge raw physical impulse with graphic immediacy. This standalone penguin sculpture channels the off-kilter, instinctual geometry characteristic of Michaud’s figurative work.

The piece is coated in thick, reflective black and white glazes, punctuated by a vivid stroke of chrome-yellow enamel along the throat. By reinterpreting naturalistic forms through deliberate distortion, inverted movement, and tactile weight, Michaud transforms a classic faunal study into an enigmatic, modern ceramic object.

Artist

Julien Michaud is a Paris-based, self-taught French artist, illustrator, and ceramicist. Originally practicing drawing as an instinctive daily ritual, Michaud’s work evolved from imaginative paper sketchbooks into three-dimensional clay forms. Transitioning from functional pottery into pure ceramic sculpture, he creates characterful, expressive figures—or "creatures"—that balance raw stoneware surfaces with vivid glazed finishes. His works function as autonomous, guardian-like presences within a space, translating the spontaneity of his graphic line directly into tactile ceramic forms.

Material Variations & Handcrafted Character

Each work presented by Pièce de Résistance is individually hand-crafted or produced in limited studio editions using raw, natural, or hand-worked materials—including wood, metal, resin, and ceramic. Due to the artisanal methodology and organic nature of these materials, subtle variations in texture, grain, tone, patination, and minor dimensional nuances are inherent to the process. Imagery and gallery display pieces (including Artist Proofs) serve as accurate references, but final pieces may display unique, natural distinctions. These variations are essential to the artistic integrity of collectible design and do not constitute defects.

Limitation of Liability

Neither Pièce de Résistance nor its represented designers and artists shall be held liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages resulting from the handling, installation, use, or placement of any object. The gallery and its designers assume no liability for damage, wear, or alteration occurring after final delivery and client acceptance, including damage resulting from improper installation, environmental exposure, or normal wear and tear.
