Playful, melancholic, and deeply expressive, Elephant by Paris-based artist Julien Michaud examines narrative sculpture through an instinctive, hand-built ceramic language. Depicting a stylized creature perched atop a soft pink sphere, the piece highlights Michaud’s origin in freehand illustration, evolving drawing into three-dimensional form.

The sculpture balances contrasting textures and glazes, pairing a smooth, pastel-glazed spherical base with the tactile, impasto-like surface of the animal figure above. Michaud’s deliberate preservation of raw gestures and asymmetrical proportions gives the creature a distinct presence—a quiet guardian holding a delicate balance between childhood memory and sculptural poise.

Artist

Julien Michaud is a Paris-based, self-taught French artist, illustrator, and ceramicist. Originally practicing drawing as an instinctive daily ritual, Michaud’s work evolved from imaginative paper sketchbooks into three-dimensional clay forms. Transitioning from functional pottery into pure ceramic sculpture, he creates characterful, expressive figures—or "creatures"—that balance raw stoneware surfaces with vivid glazed finishes. His works function as autonomous, guardian-like presences within a space, translating the spontaneity of his graphic line directly into tactile ceramic forms.

Each work presented by Pièce de Résistance is individually hand-crafted or produced in limited studio editions using raw, natural, or hand-worked materials—including wood, metal, resin, and ceramic. Due to the artisanal methodology and organic nature of these materials, subtle variations in texture, grain, tone, patination, and minor dimensional nuances are inherent to the process. Imagery and gallery display pieces (including Artist Proofs) serve as accurate references, but final pieces may display unique, natural distinctions. These variations are essential to the artistic integrity of collectible design and do not constitute defects.

Limitation of Liability

Neither Pièce de Résistance nor its represented designers and artists shall be held liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages resulting from the handling, installation, use, or placement of any object. The gallery and its designers assume no liability for damage, wear, or alteration occurring after final delivery and client acceptance, including damage resulting from improper installation, environmental exposure, or normal wear and tear.
